NIFT centre in Kannur by December

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 7 The proposed centre of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Kannur will start functioning in December this year.

The centre will focus on production of modern apparels using khadi and handloom clothes, the Minister for Industries, Mr Elamaram Kareem, said here on Wednesday while inaugurating a marketing fair meant to promote khadi and handloom clothes.

The Minister said that the State’s traditional sector was not able to produce enough khadi and handloom clothes and limited mechanisation of the industry was necessary to produce modern apparels as also to ensure good wages for the workers.

Revival bid

He said that the Government had initiated steps to rejuvenate handloom co-operative societies that had been lying defunct.

The Government’s policy is to protect traditional industries along with the development of information technology industries, he added.

Gulf showrooms

The Government will open special showrooms in the Gulf countries and other places where Keralites live as part of the drive to find new markets for khadi and handloom clothes.

Besides, handloom clothes would be supplied to school children on rebate from the next academic year, Mr Kareem said.
