Planet Sports to become independent entity

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 7 As part of its strategy to focus more on the sports category, Kishore Biyani-owned Future Group is all set to take operational control of Planet Sports, the multi-brand sports retail outlets of Planet Retail Holdings Pvt Ltd (PRHPL).

PRHPL, which is a joint venture between Pantaloon Retail India Pvt Ltd and Planet Retail Holdings, is in fact planning to separate its sports and fashion businesses into two independent entities for a more focused approach.“We have two different lines of business, one fashion and another sports, so the aim is to create separate entities to manage them. A proposal will be put forward to the boards of both Pantaloon Retail and Planet Retail for approval at their annual general meetings to make the two businesses,” said Mr Ravdeep Singh, CEO, Planet Sports.

Mr Singh said the partnership between the two companies would continue in the to-be-created entities as well and other matters related to the de-merger would be looked into by the respective board members.

Planet Sports is also looking at new product categories like cricket, for which it is in talks with companies like Speedo, Converse, Callaway, Airwalk and others for supplying equipment and apparel for the Indian market. “We are already in discussions with international suppliers for cricket related products as the game is really big in India. And some development on that front is expected by the summer of next year,” he said. Currently, the stores offer equipment and sportswear across categories like running, tennis, training, golf, fitness, basketball, motor-sports and other lifestyle products. The company plans to open 500 outlets in 25 cities by 2010, up from 45 points of sale at present. “We will invest Rs 250 in the next three years to increase the number of retail outlets,” said Mr Singh.
