Tea Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Kenya emerges top tea exporter P.S. Sundar Coonoor, Nov. 7 Kenya has emerged as the world’s largest exporter of tea in the seven months of this year, surpassing Sri Lanka and China. An analysis of the export details of the various countries indicates that the recovery of production in Kenya this yearhas helped that country to rise to Rank No:1. Regains footholdKenya, which suffered an 18 million kg (mkg) loss of production in 2006 due to prolonged frost, has reported an increase of 63.63 mkg in the first seven months of 2007 to reach an output of 221.52 mkg. Consequently, it has regained its lost footholds in foreign markets. Accordingly, its exports in the seven months rose to 207.99 million kgs – up by 30.83 million kgs. On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s total production in the seven months is 169.82 million kgs – 18.46 million kgs lower than 2006 It managed to export 164.97 million kgs, some 14 million kgs lower than last year.
