Marketing Research Industry & Economy - Health ‘Sale of sweets down by 40% during Diwali’ Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov. 9 Despite a decline in input costs of sweets, their sales on an average have dropped by over 40 per cent during the current Diwali celebrations as the consumption patterns have shifted towards dry fruits, cookies, chocolates, namkeens and other eatables. Other articles like bedsheets, crockery and portable electrical and electronics gadgets have also dented the sales of ‘mithai’, according to the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham). According to a survey conducted by the chamber of various sweet hubs in Delhi, the average mithai sale declined by over 40 per cent even though their makers have tried their best to sell variety of sugar-free sweets. The trends indicate that consumers have developed an aversion towards sweets mainly because of rising health consciousness and the consumption pattern has also witnessed changes towards the aforesaid articles as these can withstand fluctuations in temperatures and can be stored conveniently.
