Kerala Supplyco registers growth in turnover

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 9 The turnover of the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) is set to cross Rs 1,200 crore in the current year.

According to Supplyco officials, this has been made possible through efficient financial management and consumer-centric measures. In the first six months of the current year, the turnover was to the tune of Rs. 550 crore.

The officials said that during the year, the corporation was expected to contribute Rs 50 crore to the State exchequer by way of sales tax alone. The Government is paying Rs 30 crore to Supplyco a year by way of subsidy.

They said that efforts to cut down unnecessary expenditure and to plug leaks by strengthening the vigilance setup had started showing results.

The corporation will be able to earn Rs. 8 crore a year through steps to control the use of plastic carry bags.

Profit centres

As part of making the financial management of Supplyco more efficient, all its 56 depots in the State have been converted into profit centres and their working will be monitored by professional accounting firms in every district. The officials said that illegal dealings in the corporation had been eliminated by putting a stop to the practice of local cash purchase that was in vogue since 2005.
