Tea More volume, lower value at Coonoor tea auctions P.S. Sundar Coonoor, Nov. 9 Teas sold through the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) in the first ten months of this year have fetched Rs 12.83 crore less than last year. An analysis of the market report shows that this has happened because of the lower price fetched for the teas despite selling more volume. Between January and October, the CTTA conducted 43 auctions. A total volume of 30.4 million kg had been sold this year. This was 0.1 million kg more than last year. But, the average price dropped to Rs 43.89 a kg from Rs 48.27. Consequently, the overall earnings have fallen to Rs 133.43 crore from Rs 146.26 crore. This shows a fall of 8.77 per cent. The major cause for the fall has happened in the bulk of the CTC teas sold. For the orthodox teas, there was a marginal increase in price – from Rs 54.46 a kg to Rs 54.92. The volume sold rose to 2.43 mkg from 2.22 mkg. But, the average price of CTC fell sharply to Rs 42.92 a kg from Rs 47.78. In this case, even the volume sold dropped to 27.93 mkg from 28.07 mkg. With a lower volume earning a lower price, the overall returns on the bulk of the CTC teas sold fell. Currently, the prices are ruling fall below last year. The average has dropped to Rs 38 a kg – some Rs 12 a kg lower. CTC prices are averaging Rs 37 – Rs 12 less than last year. More Stories on : Tea
