Schenker to increase India headcount

To set up more warehouses


Schenker is eyeing business from the Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi in 2010 and the International Youth Games to be held in Pune in 2008.

New Delhi, Nov 12 Schenker India Private Ltd, the Indian arm of €3.5 billion-Schenker DB Logistics, plans to set up and expand five warehouses and hire about 250 people over the next one year. It plans an investment of Rs 30 crore in the Indian market, which would be routed primarily towards building warehouses and IT. The company has about 1,050 employees in India now, and plans to take its employee strength to 1,300 people by 2008-end.

Schenker expects to garner Rs 1,800-2,000 crore revenues from the Indian market by 2010, from its 2007 level of Rs 800 crore (projected), said Mr Mayur Gandhi, CFO, Schenker India.

“We have 28 warehouses now over an area of nine lakh square feet. Over the next 12 months, we plan to set up multi-client facilities (of 75,000-one lakh square feet each) at Kolkata, National Capital Region, Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai,” said Mr Chirtian Nebel, Managing Director, Schenker India, adding that in Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai, the company already has warehouses, which would be expanded.

The company primarily serves pharmaceutical clients in Hyderabad; it plans to expand its facility to one lakh square feet (from 40,000 square feet) in Pune; and to 1.5 lakh square feet (from 75,000 square feet) in Mumbai.

Additionally, Schenker is also eyeing business from the Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi in 2010 and the International Youth Games to be held in Pune in 2008.

Schenker has a Global Sports Events Group for providing specific logistics services for major events. Apart from getting the mandate to handle logistics for the Beijing Olympics in 2008, it has handled logistics for several sports events that include the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006.
