Rupee weakens by 5 paise

Mumbai, Nov 12

The rupee weakened by five paise against the greenback on Monday tracking the weakness in the domestic stock markets. The home currency opened at 39.40 and saw an intra-day high of 39.29 and a low of 39.42 before ending the day at 39.37/38, five paise down from the previous close of 39.32.

"The Sensex has been volatile and if this trend continues, the downtrend of rupee may persist," said a dealer with a private bank. Foreign exchange dealers feel that the strengthening of yen against dollar has set a base for the further strengthening of the rupee against the dollar. Dealers expect the rupee to trade in the 39.30- 39.40 range this week.

In forwards, the six-month premia closed at 1.52 per cent (1.45 per cent) and the 12-month closed at 1.17 per cent (1.18 per cent). - Our Bureau
