Tuticorin port cargo handling crosses 12 mt

Madurai, Nov. 12 The Tuticorin Port Trust has crossed the 12-million-tonne mark of cargo handling.

At the end of November 8, the cargo handled has been 120.33 lakh tonnes.

Performance

Compared to the corresponding period last year, the cargo handled has registered an increase of 16 per cent.

Mr A. Subbiah, Deputy Chairman, Tuticorin Port Trust, in a statement, said that the number of containers handled during the current year up to November 8, has been 2,65,317 TEUs, representing a growth of 20.54 per cent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.

Container traffic

In container traffic, the port is poised to achieve the 5-million TEUs mark by the end of the financial year 2007-08.

There are 10 container freight stations and three more are in the offing. One more container terminal is to be commenced shortly.

Under the National Maritime Development Programme, clearance from the Government is expected to improve the present draught level to 12.8 metres, making the port a model port in the South, he added.
