Shipping Government - Politics States - West Bengal Kolkata port cargo handling unaffected
Our Bureau Kolkata, Nov 12 The 24-hour bandh, called by the Opposition in West Bengal on Monday to protest against the bloodshed at Nandigaram, did not hit the cargo handling work of Kolkata port (including Haldia) much, according to sources. A total of 12 ships – seven at Haldia and five at Kolkata Dock System (KDS) – reported normal loading/unloading operation. Among the working ships at Haldia there were three iron ore vessels, one each coking coal and met coke and two chemicals. At KDS, three container ships and one each log and fertiliser raw materials were among those reporting normal work. As many as 18 ships – 10 in ballast, two carrying naphtha, one each carrying fuel oil, crude and log and three containers – are waiting at the Sandheads, the mouth of the Hooghly river. As many as 14 ships – nine at Haldia and five at KDS – are due to arrive while nine others – seven from Haldia and two from KDS -- are due to leave the port on Monday. The attendance of all sections of employees at Haldia, claim port sources, was normal but not so at KDS. While attendance of cargo-handling workers at KDS was normal, that of officers was 65 per cent and of class III and IV categories less than normal. More Stories on : Shipping | Politics | West Bengal
