‘TN industrial policy good for manufacturing’

R.Y. Narayanan

Coimbatore, Nov. 12 The Tamil Nadu Government has attempted to break new ground with its comprehensive industrial policy and the manufacturing sector would get a boost from it, according to Mr D. Balasundaram, President, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore (ICCIC).

He also wanted the Government to give priority to industrial housing since the major impediment to a new industrial location is the lack of housing.

Responding to the new industrial policy announced by the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, a few days back, the ICCIC President said the chamber welcomed the announcements and hoped the Government would address some of the gaps in the policy in due course.

Road, rail links

While welcoming the efforts towards upgrading the Coimbatore airport, he said the need to increase capacity of the road and rail link between Coimbatore region and Tuticorin port had not found a mention in the policy. Fourlaning the road between Thoothukudi and cities in the region like Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode is necessary, he said.

He expected that steps would be taken immediately to improve infrastructure like road, rail, power and water in the Salem-Coimbatore belt since the Government has proposed to develop Coimbatore-Salem as an industrial corridor. The essential infrastructure is already under stress there, he said.Mr Balasundaram pointed out that there was no important decision on labour reforms. The removal of restriction on employment of women in night shifts is a major demand of the textile industry.

Industrial housing

He said the proposal for industrial parks includes provision for housing but infrastructure projects eligible for State subsidy do not include housing, and suggested that this be added to the policy.

Mr Balasundaram said the Tamil Nadu Government has attempted to “break new ground” .
