Chennai, Nov. 13 The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, said the Government has initiated steps to provide rail connectivity and improve road connectivity to Sriperumbudur and Orgadam areas.

“We have taken up with the Union Government to provide rail connectivity, and road improvements are also being pursued with the National Highways Authority of India,” he said.

He inaugurated the Sriperumbudur facility of Samsung India Electronics on Tuesday. Lauding the pace at which the project was executed, Mr Karunanidhi said the Tamil Nadu Government would always encourage and support such investments.

“I am specifically citing this, just to show that we follow up all the issues and ensure that new industries are able to start production early,” he noted. Issues relating to various agencies are resolved through the single window system of the Government.

According to the new Industrial Policy, industries that make investments of over Rs 350 crore in the manufacturing sector in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur districts, and over Rs 250 crore in all other districts, will be eligible for a structured package of assistance. The Chief Minister said to encourage investment in the electronic hardware industries, this has been brought down to Rs 250 crore in eligible fixed assets in Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram, and Rs 150 crore in all other districts.

Skilled manpower

Even in the area of skilled manpower, the policy gives a lot of importance to skill development in the State. “Various initiatives are planned in collaboration with the industry to improve the infrastructure at the industrial training institutes, to revise the course content and to provide the right inputs,” he pointed out.

He also requested the company to speed up the production facility at the SEZ (30 acres in this case) too “as it would give a big boost to the exports from this region”.

Earlier welcoming the delegates, Mr Jong Yong Yun, Vice-Chairman and Global CEO of Samsung Electronics, said that the brand’s success very much depends on India.
