Outlook States - West Bengal Kolkata hotels see near 100% occupancy at year-end Somasroy Chakraborty Kolkata, Nov 14 The upcoming medical conferences in Kolkata starting from the last week of November have seen the year-end occupancy level in city hotels touch almost 100 per cent. A doctors’ seminar organised by the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Science and a diabetic conference is scheduled in the last week of November. This will be followed by Orthocon, an orthopaedic conference, in the first week of December. A neurological conference is also scheduled during the first week of January 2008. “The average occupancy level in our hotel has been above 85 per cent throughout the year. Normally, during this time of the year the occupancy level is nearly 90 per cent. But this year, thanks to these medical conferences, we will have 100 per cent occupancy,” an official of Hyatt Regency said. “The occupancy level during October this year has been lean compared to the previous year mainly due to the Pujas and strikes. From November-end we will have good business as three medical conferences are scheduled in Kolkata. Our occupancy level will touch 100 per cent,” an official of Hotel Hindustan International said. “This is peak time. We are already having 100 per cent occupancy in our hotel,” Mr Ranvir Bhandari, General Manager, ITC Sonar, told Business Line. The scene is similar in other business and luxury hotels in the city including Taj Bengal and The Park. The high demand for rooms is also likely to push up the room tariffs in the city hotels. “We offer the best available rates to our customers which depend on the demand-supply situation. The rates from November onwards is likely to be slightly higher compared to the corresponding period of last year due to high demand for rooms,” the Hyatt official said.
