Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 14 The Kerala Cabinet has decided to seek a joint inspection by Kerala and Tamil Nadu officials into the condition of the Mullaperiyar dam and also approach the Centre to take immediate steps to amicably settle the issue between the two States.

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, told newspersons after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that this was in the light of the report of the expert committee, which had found seepages in the dam at many points.

He said that the Government was resolved to go ahead with the proposal to construct a new dam at the site to protect the lives of the people living downstream even while ensuring supply of water to Tamil Nadu for irrigation purposes.

The committee appointed by the State Government, had inspected the dam recently in the wake of heavy rains in the region.

The Chief Minister said that Kollam-Kottapuram waterways would be inaugurated on November 20. The issues involving the resettlement of people along the way and the construction of a terminal at Alappuzha had been solved.

The waterways is being extended further north from Kottapuram to Vadakara and Mahe covering a distance of 32 kilometres and the work on it has already stared. The Centre has sanctioned funds for the project, which is scheduled to be completed in two years.

The Chief Minister said that the foundation stone for the Smart City project in Kochi would be laid on November 16. The project is a joint venture between the State Government and TECOM Investments based in Dubai.
