Mobile user base up by 5.7 m in Oct

New Delhi, Nov. 14

Notwithstanding the crunch in spectrum, GSM-based mobile subscriber base continued to grow at a scorching pace with over 5.7 million new users in October. The all-India GSM subscriber base grew from 154 million in September 2007 to 159.7 million in October 2007. Bharti Airtel was the market leader with 50.9 million subscribers. The company added a whopping 2 million new subscribers in October alone. Vodafone Essar, formerly Hutchison Essar, was at the number two slot with over 37 million subscribers adding 1.5 million new users. State-owned BSNL has added only about 7.2 lakh new subscribers and is at the number three spot with 31 million mobile users. Idea Cellular is at the number four spot with 19.4 million subscribers. In terms of geographical spread, mobile subscribers are most concentrated in Category B circles with 58 million users compared to just 26 million in the four metros. —
