Human Resources Manpower issue a ‘challenge’ to construction equipment sector

Our Bureau Bangalore, Nov. 14 Skilled manpower could pose a serious challenge to the earth moving and construction equipment (ECE) industry growing at a rapid pace. The industry, estimated to hit an annual revenue growth of $13 billion by 2015, would need to add annually 15 per cent of the current level of workforce engaged in the industry. Stating this here on the opening day of the five-day Excon 2007 trade fair, Mr P.K. Mohapatra, Chairman, CII, Southern Region, said the industry should make efforts to meet the challenge and added that the CII would extend its help coordinating with the corporates in skill development efforts. He said the construction equipment industry would need at least half of 10 million workforce to achieve ECE sector’s growth projected at 30-40 per cent. Excon 2007, which has attracted the largest number of participation this year, was inaugurated by the Karnataka Governor, Mr Rameshwar Thakur, today. Mr K.V. Kamath, Managing Director and CEO, ICICI Bank, said the manpower issue was a problem common to all industries, but struck a note of assurance on financial requirement to the ECE industry saying banks were prepared to meet its needs. The inaugural session was also addressed by Mr Jamshyd Godrej, Chairman and Managing Director, Godrej& Boyce; Mr Vipin Sondhi, Chairman Excon 2007 and Managing Director and CEO, JCB India Ltd; and Mr N.
