New airport policy soon: Patel

New Delhi, Nov. 14

A new policy on airports would be in place by the first half of next year, the Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, has said. Responding to concerns raised by MPs about the need to have a relook at the existing policy so that multiple airports can come up in metropolitan cities, the Minister said the issue had also been raised at the recent meeting on infrastructure chaired by the Prime Minister.

At present the Government policy does not allow a second international airport to come up within 150 km of an existing international airport. At the meeting, a presentation showed Pawan Hans Helicopters has plans to acquire 20 more helicopters at a cost of Rs 496 crore. The company, which earned a net profit of Rs 13.54 crore during 2007-08, has a fleet of 35 copters. - Our Bureau
