Kolkata, Nov. 14 The West Bengal Government today announced a financial package for the people affected by the developments in Nandigram. An amount of Rs 1 crore will be disbursed from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund .

Speaking to newspersons at Writers’ Buildings here, the Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said Rs 10,000 would be given to those whose houses had been completely destroyed or damaged. Rs 5,000 would be given to those whose houses had been partially destroyed or damaged. In addition, Rs 1,000 would be given to each affected family to buy utensils. Rice would also be given to the villagers from the District Magistrate’s Grant Relief. In view of the ensuing winter season, the Government is also considering providing clothes.

Mr Bhattacharjee said the funds would be disbursed through the office of the District Magistrate. The district administration had been asked to identify the families that are eligible for such compensation.

He said the recent incidences of violence in Nandigram would not have happened if the Central Reserve Police Force was deployed in Nandigram earlier.

He blamed the Centre for its delay in responding to the State’s request for deployment of the CRPF in Nandigram.

Mr Bhattacharjee said the situation in Nandigram was returning to normal and only about 400-500 people were yet to get back to their homes. They would be brought back to their homes by tomorrow, he said.
