DSIR award for Tata Steel
Our Bureau
Mumbai, Nov 15 Tata Steel has won the DSIR Award 2007 (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) for its R&D effort in implementing an indigenous technology for removing hexavalent chromium (Hex Cr) from chrome ore concentrates.
Apart from environmental benefits, this technology will help save 250 litres of water per tonne of concentrate (saving about 125 million litres of water per annum) at the company mines.
Dr Debashish Bhattacharjee, Chief – R&D and Scientific Services, Tata Steel, received the award in New Delhi on Thursday. “With innovative research and tenacious implementation, the Hex Cr level has been brought down from 0.4 ppm to 0.001 ppm in our chromium ore concentrate. The cut-off set by WHO is 0.05 ppm. This is indeed a huge achievement for us and we are very proud to have received this prestigious award,” Dr Bhattacharjee said.
The team for the project was highly cross-functional with contributions from CLRI, Sukinda operations, chemical labs for measuring low levels of Hex Cr and the Environment Department. Mr. Gajanan Kapure, a researcher in R&D, led the team.
