Letters Invaluable iron ore reserves of India Among the most valuable achievements of our Five-Year Plans of the earlier decades were the giant public sector steel plants in Bhilai, Rourkela and Durgapur. Then, the private sector also stepped in, following the pioneer Tata group. Steel production in the country has been growing rapidly, and the manufacturing strengths have grown so that many players produce even high tensile steel, which was earlier being imported. Considering the fact that India is capable of exporting the steel it produces as a variety of finished goods, the practice of exporting raw iron ore is unwise and against our own interests. Knowing that we have vast reserves of high quality iron ore, one wonders why, instead of conserving them for essential domestic purposes, there is a plan to resort to exporting? The National Mineral Policy, on the anvil, should consider this matter very seriously. V. M. Valsalan Thiruvananthapuram More Stories on : Letters | Minerals
