Kochi, Nov. 16 The SmartCity project in Kochi, for which the foundation stone was laid on Friday by the Kerala Chief Minister, Mr V.S.Achuthanandan, is to be developed into a rich and vibrant knowledge-based industry community.

Mr Ahmad Bin Byat, Executive Chairman of Tecom, one of the promoters of SmartCity, in a message read out in his absence said that the company would closely work with the Kerala Government to achieve this objective.

He pointed out that Tecom would be designing the project to create an inspiring, productive environment where knowledge workers can exchange ideas, share knowledge and explore partnerships.

SmartCity Kochi and SmartCity Malta in the Mediterranean region are the first two members of SmartCity’s global network of knowledge-economy townships. This global network will foster productive linkages and tap synergies between knowledge industry centres worldwide, thereby contributing to the economic development, he said.

The company envisaged Kochi to be a significant hub of excellence for knowledge-based industries, as it had identified Kochi as a location with significant potential to become a knowledge based industry hub.

Earlier, the Chief Minister and Mr Fareed Abdul Rahman, Executive Director, SmartCity, jointly laid the foundation stone for the project coming up on 246 acres of land at Edachira near Kakkanad.

The project will be modelled on Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Knowledge Village and it has an employment generation potential of over 90,000 jobs over 10 years.

The project, which is estimated to cost Rs 800 crore, will offer a host of business support services as well as residential, hospitality, retail and recreational facilities.
