Karunanidhi asks cos to invest in healthcare

Chennai, Nov. 16 More corporate houses should come forward to invest time and resources to offer affordable medical care to the masses, said the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi.
Delivering his keynote address after inaugurating the Chettinad Health City at Kelambakkam near here, the Chief Minister said be it the State Government or the Union Government, without co-operation and joint efforts from the private sector and big corporate houses, it is not possible to provide good medical services to all sections of society.
The Chettinad Health City is a non-profit health city venture promoted by the Chettinad Group. The first phase of the Rs 500-crore project has been completed with a 600-bed hospital, a medical college, dental and nursing colleges.
Earlier, welcoming the gathering on the occasion, Mr M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Managing Trustee of Rajah Muthiah Chettiar Charitable & Educational Trust, said the facility will provide world-class healthcare for patients and quality education for students.
The phase two and three will promote medical tourism and research, develop health information technology and establish health industries. The entire project will be completed by 2009, he said.
