Events States - Karnataka ‘Human rights commissions should redefine agenda’ Our Bureau Bangalore, Nov. 16 Media’s catalytic role in protecting human rights by exposing incidents of injustice and atrocities on civil society came in for commendation, but with an observation that media should play a more effective role by disseminating information on human rights. Citing the example of farmers suicides and migration of rural population due to famine and drought, Mr H.K. Patil, Leader of the Opposition, Karnataka Legislative Council, said the two phenomenon posed a serious question on whether steps taken to ensure human rights, particularly the poor, had proved effective. ‘Redefine agenda’Mr Patil, who was speaking at a seminar organised by the UNI (United News of India) Employees Union, Bangalore, said on Friday that the human rights commissions should redefine their agenda to ensure that rural poor’s right to live in dignity was not violated. Mr N. Dharam Singh, former chief minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, presided over the function to mark the 20th anniversary of the UNI Employees Union. Mr J.S. Patil, Special Officer, Karnataka State Law University, Hubli, highlighted the catalytic role played by the media in raising issues like declaration of internal emergency in 1975, anti-defamation bill of 1980,but said the goal was far from achieved as large scale violations continued to challenge the society.
