Reliance Retail to set up global footwear format

Debdatta Das

New Delhi, Nov. 16 Reliance Retail, which recently opened a one-stop-shop destination footwear format, Reliance Footprint, is planning to set up a multi-brand international footwear format by the end of the year.

“Having recently opened the large Footprint format, we are now planning to open a smaller format that will house only international brands, by the end of this year,” said Mr G. Shankar, Chief Executive, Footwear, Reliance Retail.

Reliance, had launched the Footprint format in the first week of November in Bangalore and Hyderabad. The 10,000-sq. ft stores are spread across three floors that houses the men’s, women’s and kid’s in separate floors. “Footprint has a 20:80 ratio of private label footwear to other domestic and international brands,” said Mr Shanker.

The company has created footwear private labels such as Viviana, Tosca, Mancini and Monza for occasions ranging from casual, formal to party and sports. “In fact, once we have reached a certain scale and the private labels have been accepted, we would not mind developing them as individual footwear brands,” said Mr Shanker.

The company sources 90 per cent of the private labels from manufacturers, mainly exporters of foreign brands in Chennai and Agra. Some of the international brands housed in the store are Scholl, Hush Puppies, Reebok and Adidas.

The current domestic footwear market, including brands both international and domestic as well as the unorganised segment, is around Rs 15,000 crore, of which only 40 per cent of the branded footwear is organised.

“We expect the market to grow to Rs 25,000 crore by 2010, by which time we also hope to achieve a healthy 12 per cent share of the market,” said Mr Shanker.
