Coimbatore, Nov. 16 The World Neem Conference – Neem 2007 – is to be held from November 21 to 24 at Coimbatore.

The event, the fifth in the series, is organised by the Neem Foundation in collaboration with the industry, universities and research institutions.

The conference would focus on ‘Neem for a safe and healthy world’ by highlighting the advances and breakthroughs in neem research and development.

Apart from the 18 plenary lectures, there would be poster presentation sessions and an exposition of neem products.

Recalling the significant position assumed by the neem tree in recent years, Ms Pramila Thakkar, Managing Trustee, Neem Foundation, said, “though neem has emerged as a viable alternative and is found environmentally safe, the world is taking this fact more seriously than India”.

Emphasising the need for extensive promotion and techno-commercial back up from the powers that be, Ms Thakkar suggested the need for organised large scale neem plantations, guaranteed supply of quality neem seeds, pilot initiatives for promoting production and application of neem-based technologies, exemption of such products from central excise and sales tax at least for a period of five years, specification of quality standards and provision of independent test houses for certifying such products, registration of neem products for pest management and a time-bound schedule for clearance of such registration.

Mr K.S. Hegde, Chairman, Steering Committee, WNC 2007, has sought the participants’ involvement in creating and building scientific and technological capacity to challenge the existing barriers through the medium of neem.
