IIM-A to focus on faculty, funds

Ahmedabad, Nov. 17 Acknowledging major challenges in maintaining the pre-eminence of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A), its new Director today said he would endeavour to attract faculty, build infrastructure and create funds for self-sufficiency. “Getting and retaining faculty is obviously a major challenge. We want to add 15 more to our current faculty strength of 85, and focus on doctoral programmes to have our own supply of faculty,” Professor Samir Kumar Barua, who joined the IIM-A faculty in 1980, told reporters during his first interaction with the media after assuming charge on November 8. Now, four of six IIMs in India have IIM-A alumni as Directors. He has succeeded the high-profile Dr Bakul Dholakia, eminent economist and management expert, who laid down office after completion of five years’ term last month.

The Adani Group recently appointed Dr Dholakia as an advisor. Asked whether the IIM-A would recommend a multi-fold increase in salaries and compensation to retain faculty and talent, Dr Barua said the Institute would wait for the Pay Commission’s report before doing so. Attracting faculty from abroad was difficult five years ago.

Now, with the Indian economy booming, the Institute expected to have more faculty from outside India. About infrastructure development, he said the IIM-A would be doing capital expenditure and have self-reliance in funding as in the past.
