Improved demand at Kolkata tea sale

Last week, CTC and dust teas at all the North Indian tea auction centres at Kolkata, Siliguri and Guwahati saw improved demand at fully firm to dearer rates for all categories, according to J. Thomas and Company Ltd, the tea auctioneers.

The major blenders, packeteers and western India buyers operated strongly with good support from other internal markets.

Orthodox teas saw good demand at irregular rates with larger brokens recording a slight easing in value.

The buyers from CIS and the West Asia were active.

Darjeeling teas sold well at around last levels, with good support from the major blenders and local dealers.

Traditional exporters operated for better sorts.

Latest reports from upcountry suggest scattered rainfall and a sudden drop in temperatures.

INTERNATIONAL

Kenyan teas at Mombasa saw firm demand at irregular rates.

Overall auction level for the week was higher than that in the previous year.

Sri Lankan orthodox teas saw good demand for broken grades at firm rates.

Larger leaf varieties recorded an easing in value.
