Sattur Chamber welcomes subsidy for jatropha cultivation

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Nov. 18 Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the support extended to jatropha cultivation and extraction of bio-diesel from it in the new industrial policy announced by the Tamil Nadu Government recently.

India depends on foreign countries to meet its needs of petroleum products and nearly 60 per cent of its foreign exchange reserves go to meet the same. Under the circumstances, the support extended by the Tamil Nadu Government by way of 50 per cent subsidy for jatropha seeds in the State in its new industrial policy is very encouraging as the bio-diesel extracted from it is useful as an alternative to petroleum products.

Foreign companies such as DI Oil Plc from the UK, engaged in the cultivation of jatropha worldwide and extraction of bio-diesel, is to cultivate jatropha in 3.5 lakh hectares of land over four years in the country.

Protecting locals

By the end of this year, jatropha would have been raised in about one lakh hectares. It is cultivating the same in association with private parties in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh among others. The Government should ensure that local cultivators of jatropha are not affected by the entry of multinational companies.

Bio-diesel can be extracted from the seeds of citrus and other fruits that are at present thrown away as waste. Like mixing of ethanol with petroleum, bio-diesel mixing proportions also need to be mandated, he said.
