Outlook Venus to take Potentox injectable overseas Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov. 19 Venus Remedies is readying to take its injectable Potentox, for hospital-acquired pneumonia, to international markets. The product clocked Rs 6 crore in sales in the domestic market in the first six months since its launch last October. The drug (a fixed dose combination of cephalosporin with aminoglycoside), the company claims is 50 per cent more efficient than existing therapies. The single shot injectable, said spokesperson Ms Sonia Malhotra , also “saves cost, reduces span of treatment and has very, very few side effects” compared to older options. It will start being sold in the Ukraine very soon. The company has completed the patent-filing process for the product in individual 48 countries around the world and hopes to do good business from its exports. The company said it had completed the National Phase of the Patent Cooperation Treaty application for its global patent across Europe, the US, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. With revenues of Rs 141 crore last year, she said the company is targeting Rs 200 crore this fiscal and 25 per cent share from exports. Having built eight manufacturing facilities, and earned EU-GMP for two facilities, the company hopes to market the drug in most countries on its own. Venus estimates a billion dollar market for this drug. It has, however, reserved a different strategy for the US; according to Ms Malhotra, the company is in talks with large international pharmaceutical companies to out-license the drug. The patented drug used in the treatment of hospital acquired infections that resist antibiotic is currently marketed by Venus, as well as Nicholas Piramal, IPCA Laboratories and Alembic in India.
