Our Bureau

Kolkata, Nov. 20

Between April and October this year, South Eastern Railway (SER) carried approximately 26 million tonnes (mt) of parcels as compared to 16 mt in the same period last year, thus registering 62.5 per cent growth.

The earnings at about Rs 47.8 crore (Rs 29.5 crore) showed a growth of 62 per cent.

SER, according to a press release, is also running lease services in respect of VPU (open ending parcel van), SLR (luggage van) and guard’s lobbies (space available in the guard’s compartment for carrying luggage).

At present, 58 SLR of four tonnes each are on lease in 30 trains, 21 VPUs in 12 trains and 11 guard’s lobbies in 11 trains.

The leasings have led to 76 per cent rise in throughput and 68 per cent in earnings.

The VPUs, SLRs and guard’s lobbies are generally attached to passenger trains, not goods trains.
