Foreign Trade India trailing behind China in Asean trade, says FICCI Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov. 20 India’s share of exports to ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) grew marginally in nine years compared to China that increased its trade by almost seven times in the same period. According to a FICCI report, the country’s share in ASEAN global imports increased from 1 per cent to 1.6 per cent between 1997-2006, as against China’s exports that rose from 3.7 per cent to 11.4 per cent. According to the data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics, in 2006-07 India’s exports to ASEAN grew by 21 per cent to $12.6 billion, lower than its imports which grew by over 66 per cent to $18 billion. For 20 of the top 25 products that account for 93 per cent of India’s exports to the region, China’s share was higher. While China’s share stood at 41 per cent in apparels, India lagged behind with about 4 per cent share. Similarly, in iron and steel China’s share was 15 per cent and India’s at 2 per cent. For machinery and mechanical appliances, China’s was 18 per cent against a fraction of that of India, said the FICCI study. The industry chamber expressed concern about ASEAN’s share in India’s overall trade which stood between 8 and 10 per cent in the period as against India’s marginal trade with ASEAN countries which hovered between 1.5 per cent and over 2 per cent.
