New Delhi, Nov. 20 Mr B. Ramalinga Raju, Chairman of Satyam Computer Services Ltd, has been named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2007.

Nine other recipients of the award under different categories include Ms Ela Bhatt, Founder and General Secretary of Self- Employed Women’s Association; Mr Atul Punj, Chairman and Managing Director of Punj Lloyd Ltd; Mr Sajjan Jindal, Chairman and Managing Director of JSW Steel Ltd; Mr Shiv Nadar, Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer of HCL Enterprises Ltd; Mr Raghav Bahl, Managing Director of Network 18; Mr Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, Founder and Managing Director of Acme Tele Power; Ms Shikha Sharma, Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance; and Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman and Managing Director of Serum Institute of India Ltd.

The lifetime achievement award was conferred upon Mr Keshub Mahindra, the patriarch of Mahindra group.

Raju to represent India

Mr Raju will now represent India at the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Monte Carlo, Monaco in May 2008.

In a run-up to the award function earlier in the day chairperson of the jury, Mr K.V. Kamath, Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Bank, said, “Organic growth should score in India.

"Most businesses are growing and if they continue their growth momentum, then in all likelihood they can double their turnover”.

He was speaking at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneurs’ Round Table, ‘Sustaining Business Performance’ on the sidelines of the award ceremony here.

Voicing their opinion on the issue, industry giants said the Indian economy was on a roll and corporate honchos believe that organic growth is the best way a business can grow in the present market-driven conditions.

Atleast 75 per cent of the round-table participants chose organic growth as preferred means for achieving scale, while only 15 per cent voted for acquisitions.

These were the findings of a spot poll conducted among over 40 CEOs and entrepreneurs.

They were answering the question on the way forward for growth.

Which way should a business leader move: organic growth, partnerships and alliances, joint ventures, or acquisitions?

The discussion, based on the theme: ‘The Growth Paradigm’, was attended, among others, by the finalists and jury members of the Awards, besides CEOs of leading corporates including Mr S Ramadorai, CEO, TCS and Mr KV Kamath of ICICI Bank, Mr Ashish Dhawan, Senior Managing Director, ChrysCapital among others.

On whether senior management should spend time on strategy or deal with challenges that are driving the quarter’s performance, 53 per cent of the participants said managing short-term performance takes more than half of the time and leaves lesser time for long-term performance.
