Foreign Trade Government - Foreign Relations India keen to boost ties with East Africa
Reinforcing relationships: Dr Ashwani Kumar, Minister of State for Industry, with Mr Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda, in Kampala. Our Bureau Chennai, Nov. 21 The Minister of State for Industry, Dr Ashwani Kumar, has said that India looks forward to increasing its economic engagement with East Africa. Dr Kumar, who is leading a business delegation to the Commonwealth Business Forum 2007 being held in Kampala, Uganda, had meetings with the Ugandan President, Mr Yoweri Museveni, and the Rwandan President, Mr Paul Kagame. During the meetings, the Minister reiterated India’s desire to reinforce special and historic relationship with African countries, according to a press release issued by the Minister’s office. The release quoted Mr Musuveni as saying that he was looking forward to his visit to India next year and that he hopes to have extensive discussions with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who will be in Kampala for the CHOGM from November 22 to 25. Dr Kumar told Mr Museveni that India recognised Uganda’s leadership as an important influence in the East African community and that Uganda was on a high economic growth trajectory because of his government’s progressive policies. During his meeting with President Mr Kagame of Rwanda, the Minister appreciated the President’s leadership in restoring political and economic stability to Rwanda after years of violence. The release said that Dr Kumar exchanged views with the Nigerian Foreign Minister and told him that India attached importance to its strategic partnership with Nigeria, which is a major supplier of crude oil to India.
