Well met, in winter
Winter is the season for international conferences in the capital and this year, the Fortune group of publications, for the first time, held its annual global event in New Delhi recently. But what was different was the format of the two-day event. Probably for the first time, a reception for industrialists was organised at the historic Red Fort, hosted by the Commerce and Industry Minister, Kamal Nath. There was another at the histor
ic Old Fort, Mughal emperor Humayun’s seat of power many centuries ago.
The visiting CEOs of global multinationals did not dine at the usual five-star hotels — instead they split into groups and had private dinners at the homes of Indian industrialists. Not only did this provide for greater networking but it also added a personal touch to the whole programme.
Even the sessions were conducted differently. Instead of Ministers and officials reading out their speeches and later responding to questions, this conference saw a brief presentation by the politicians and officials after which they left.
The assembled gathering then chose a panel of Indian industrialists who discussed with their visiting counterparts the import of what the Minister had said, how far the intentions of the Government were doable, the idea being to give the participating delegates an opportunity to assess first-hand what is actually happening in India.
