Govt considering Factories Act amendment

New Delhi, Nov. 22 The Union Government is considering amendments to the Factories Act, enacted in 1948 by including provision of a “rational alternative” to the current definition of “occupier” of a factory unit to ensure industrial safety, said Mr S. K. Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment. He was addressing a two-day Seminar on Industrial Process Safety Management organised jointly by FICCI and the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Mr S. Krishnan, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Labour & Employment and Mr Srivastava, have sought FICCI recommendations to make amendments in the Act such as tightening of safety norms.

According to the officials, the Government was also in the process of formulating a draft policy on Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) after detailed consultations with industry associations, said a chambers statement here.
