LifeCell sets up centre for transplants

Our Bureau

Chennai, Nov. 23LifeCell, a cord blood stem cell banking and research organisation, has set up a subsidiary that will focus on stem cell transplants and research.

Called TRICell, the first research centre would be inaugurated on November 28 at Sri Ramachandra University. The centre, spread across 10,000 sq ft, will cater to stem cell and bone marrow transplants for hematological and oncological disorders.

Eight patients can be treated on a long-term basis and many more can avail themselves of follow-up treatments at the centre, said Mr S. Abhaya Kumar, Vice-Chairman, TRICell.

About Rs 5 crore has been the initial investment in the centre that is later expected to introduce treatment methods of regenerative medicine. Such treatments, costing over Rs 1 crore abroad, would be made available at over Rs 7 lakh in India, Mr Kumar said at a press conference.

By 2009, four more such centres (each requiring Rs 5-10 crore investment) would be set up in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Nagpur.
