New Delhi, Nov 23 International calls to the US and Canada would now cost just Rs 1.75 per minute from BSNL and MTNL phones compared to Rs 7.20 a minute at present.

BSNL has launched a calling card - CallNow - which allows its landline subscribers to make cheaper ISD calls to the US and Canada.

Tariffs for calls to other destinations such as France, Russia, the UK and South East Asia would vary between Rs 3.25 per minute and Rs 4 per minute, depending on the denomination of the calling card.

This heats up the competition in the international long distance telephony segment. Earlier, Reliance Communication had dropped tariffs for calling the US and Canada to Rs 1.99 a minute on its global calling card worth Rs 1,900.

The advantage of a calling card is that users do not have to pay any security deposit or rentals for making long-distance calls though operators do deduct a nominal service charge on a global calling card. Calling cards also offer cheaper per minute calls compared to calling from a cell phone, where operators charge around Rs 7 per minute for calls to the US.

BSNL has also partnered Indiatimes for launching Free Messaging Service which enables mobile subscribers to send SMS at no cost. However, the receiver of the SMS would be charged Re 1.
