People Industry & Economy - Entrepreneurship Take inspiration from visionaries to be competitive: Kalam Our Bureau Mumbai, Nov. 24 Lauding late Seth Walchand Hirachand as a creative genius on the occasion of the industrialist’s 125th birth anniversary celebrations in Mumbai, former President Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam suggested that the group now set up a research institute to promote new ideas. Cherishing memories of his interaction with the company as a young scientist, Mr Kalam said: “India should take inspiration from visionaries like Walchand Hirachand to promote itself from the 48th position in world competitive index. It took just 38 days for Seth Hirachandji to set up country’s first shipping company in India.” Walchand Industries Ltd, founded by Seth Walchand Hirachand, was formed as a sugar company in 1908, and now is into construction, shipping, engineering, agriculture and agriculture products, automobiles, aerospace and finance. At the event, (attended by film actor Mr Amitabh Bachhan, among others) Mr Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries, praised Seth Walchand Hirachand as “a visionary who along with JRD Tata and Aditya Birla foresaw globalisation of economy 100 years ago.” Millions of villagers will migrate to the city in next 40 years, noted Mr Mukesh Ambani. The real challenge would be to take the benefits of economic growth to the rural areas so that the social economic equilibrium is maintained, he added. The celebrations will now move to Walchand Nagar, a nuclear township at Satara in Maharashtra, where Dr Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, will on Sunday address 5,000 guests including residents of the township, factory workers and people who have been part of the visionary Seth Hirachand’s dream.
