Pollution Curbing carbon dioxide emissions The International Maritime Organisation's Secretary- General recently told the IMO Council meeting that he was keen to accelerate the process of curbing carbon gas emissions from ships. The steps being contemplated would include a CO2 Emission Indexing Scheme, which would be a CO2 emission baseline and technical, operational and market-based method to achieve a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The IMO Chief has been quoted as saying in the Shipping Gazette that necessary standards should be finalised soon so that those could be placed before the March meeting of the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee. After all, the IMO too needs to demonstrate its determination to tackle the threat to the global environment without delay.
