More freshers gain from Wipro’s Magnum Opus

Anjali Prayag

Bangalore, Nov. 26 Magnum Opus, Wipro’s campus to career programme for engineering students, will involve about 1,700 students across 75 colleges this year.

This massive initiative, aimed at giving ‘hands-on’ programming experience and domain expertise to students, is a collaborative effort by senior project and technical managers from Wipro and engineering students who have been made job offers by the company.

More than 50 per cent of the students for the project come from Tier-II towns.

This year, Magnum Opus involved 450 students across 55 campuses working on two main themes of Service Level Objective framework and IP and Multimedia subsystem framework.

The students and 85 senior Wipro managers spent 6-8 months working as a part of the overall virtual team to develop close to 1,50,000 lines of code for a project.

Mr Rajesh Ram Mishra, Chief Technology Officer - Telecom & Product Engineering Solutions, Wipro Technologies, said that the initiative, kicked off last year had improved the joining rates of freshers into the company from 70 to 95 per cent this year. “They are motivated by the fact that their work is being recognised by the company and is used as feeder to Wipro’s IP programme.”

For the students, the benefit is three-fold: they are able to get industry experience and thus a bigger picture of the IT profession, get started on billable projects on priority and start work on the same domain as they did for the project. This saves the company precious time that’s spent on initial training, Mr Mishra said.
