Power generation

The Eleventh Plan target for new power generation capacity addition is above 78,500 MW, with the first year output set at 12,500 MW. This year, the shortfall has been estimated as 40 per cent, or likely commissioning envisaged as 7,500 MW, with just 3,700 MW added so far in seven months this year. In fact, these are spillover projects from the Tenth Plan. In the event of further slippage, it is unlikely even 50 per cent of the target can be achieved by the end of the Plan period. The government should be pragmatic about the possible achievements so that other associated services, especially coal supply, can be coordinated.
