Transport Dept to offer online services

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad, Nov. 27 Vehicle owners in Andhra Pradesh will soon be able to pay online fee for renewals, driving licences, taxes and a host of other services.

To begin with, the department is launching pilot projects in Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Kadapa districts in January.

“We are going to offer online interface with regard to payment of 27 services. We have tied up with all major banks,” Ms Poonam Malakondaiah, Commissioner for Transport, told Business Line.

While offering convenience to vehicle users, the online initiative will also help reduce the burden on the staff and, more importantly, reduce corruption.

After testing the interface for three months, the department will fine-tune the system before rolling out the services to the rest of the State.

The initiative is part of the three-tier computerisation programme, which is aimed at networking all the offices of the department across the State.

Simultaneously, the department is planning to upgrade all the 15 inter-State check posts by equipping them with networked cameras.

“All the vehicles coming and going out of the State at any of these points would be captured on cameras. This can be monitored live from the headquarters,” Ms Malakondaiah said.

Realising the fact that a variety of Departments are involved in regard to inter-State movement of vehicles, the Transport Department has decided to rope in their peers such as Commercial Taxes, Excise and Mining Departments to make the effort more useful.

For this, a pilot would be launched at the Zaheerabad check post in January.

Besides, the online connectivity would also allow help people to go to any Transport Department office, if need be, no matter where their vehicles are registered.

“They don’t need go to the office where their vehicle was registered,” the Commissioner explained.
