Khadi cluster set up near Kerala capital

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 27 A khadi cluster has been set up at the Khadi Production Centre of Trivandrum Sarvodaya Sangh, near Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district.

Inaugurating the cluster on Monday evening, Kerala Governor Mr R. L. Bhatia said that there is a need to create effective marketing facilities for khadi products.

Khadi and other village industries, which provide a livelihood to millions of villagers, need to be made more competitive in the face of globalisation, he added.

Funding

The cluster, which has been given funding under the Government of India’s Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries, is being supported by the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board (KKVIB).

The investment in the cluster over the next three years is expected to be approximately Rs 1.38 crore.

The cluster, which currently provides employment to 1,200 spinners and weavers, is expected to provide jobs to 800 more soon.
