CCEA nod for Rs 790-cr handloom development scheme

New Delhi, Nov. 27 In a bid to help handloom weavers in developing/diversifying into new products and designs, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given approval for implementing the Integrated Handlooms Development Scheme as a Centrally sponsored plan scheme in the 11th Plan.
The total cost involved is Rs 790 crore.
Briefing newspersons on the decision here on Tuesday, the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, said that the implementation of the scheme would help weavers to upgrade their looms, provide suitable workplace with market support, and thereby, improve their earnings and socio-economic conditions.
Mr Chidambaram said that the scheme would be implemented for five years beginning from 2007-08 up to 2011-2012. The budget provision of Rs 790 crore would also be used to meet the committed liabilities of the four erstwhile schemes namely Deen Dayal Hathkarga Protsahan Yojana; integrated handlooms training project; workshed-cum-housing scheme; and integrated handloom cluster development scheme.
