Disaster response fund set up

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 27 To unify the funding mechanism for disaster response and relief under one fund, the Cabinet gave its nod for constitution of National Disaster Response Fund and merger of National Calamity Contingency Fund with it, effective from April 1, 2010.

The fund would be under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs. An amount of Rs 100 crore would be provided in the fund.

The proposal will meet the statutory requirements of the provisions of the DM Act, 2005. It will enable the National Executive Committee under the chairmanship of Home Secretary or Secretary, in-charge of Disaster Management, to meet the expenses for emergency response in the wake of disasters. It will unify the funding mechanism for disaster response and relief under one fund to be constituted under the Act.
