Health Government - Policy States - Other States Govt to set up blood banks in 600 districts Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov 27 The Government will set up blood banks in 600 districts across India and a model blood bank in all the States within the next 2-3 years, said Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, Minister for Health and Family Welfare. Centres of Excellence will be set up at all the four metros at a cost of Rs 25 crore each to support the regional requirements of testing and storage of blood, said the Minister at the National Conference on “How Accessible and Safe is ‘Safe’ Blood?”, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to commemorate World AIDS Day on December 1. He also announced that the Government will establish a plasma fractioning unit. A National Blood Authority will be set up to promote and regulate the process of donations, transfusions and policies regarding blood. India has reduced HIV/AIDS as a cause of blood transfusion to 2 per cent and the Government has set a target of 0.5 per cent, he added. On the role of Government, Dr Ramadoss said that the ‘National Rural Health Mission’ with a budget of Rs15,800 crore is the largest initiative by the Government of India on the health sector but it required the support of private companies to implement the mission.
