Roadways States - Tamil Nadu SC dismisses TN bus operators’ plea New Delhi, Nov. 28 The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a batch of petitions challenging the hike in vehicle tax from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per seat imposed on Omni bus operators in Tamil Nadu. A bench headed by Mr Justice S.H. Kapadia dismissed the batch of SLPs (Special Leave Petitions) on the ground that there was no merit in the challenge. The Tamil Nadu Omni Bus Owners Association and others had filed the SLPs challenging a Madras High Court order of November 29, 2005, which had upheld the hike. The petitioners had contended that the tax imposed a very heavy burden on the contract carriages compared with other class of motor vehicles such as stage carriages which operated on fixed routes. It was contended that the “hefty” hike would eliminate many contract operators from the field. They also submitted that the Omni bus operators were singled out for higher tax burden, and hence, sought quashing of the Government order. However, the apex court found the order valid and dismissed the petition. More Stories on : Roadways | Courts/Legal Issues | Tamil Nadu
