‘Make health insurance affordable’

Chennai, Nov. 28

Unless health insurance catches on in a big way, healthcare in India cannot be made affordable to all, according to Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India. Inaugurating the TRICell stem cell transplant and research centre at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre (SRMC) here today, he said States should look at making health insurance plans available to the public at an affordable premium and cited the example of such a plan in Karnataka. Talking about the centre, he sai d stem cell research and treatment could be used to treat painful physical conditions like leukemia, especially in children. TRICell has tied up with Boston-based Harvest Technologies to carry out a study in the area of peripheral vascular disease on 60 patients at SRMC. The centre, set up with an initial investment of about Rs 5 crore would also cater to bone marrow transplants for hematological and oncological disorders.
