AAI told to fully utilise funds in XI Plan

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov 28 Airports Authority of India, which plans to increase its spending by more than 250 per cent during the Eleventh Plan period to Rs 12,417 crore, has been asked by the Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertakings to fully utilise the allocated funds by creating and augmenting the infrastructure and operational facilities at airports.

The committee, which tabled its report in Parliament on Wednesday, has recommended that the authority should create an appropriate mechanism or framework through which full utilisation of funds is planned and ensured.

It has also suggested that an institutional mechanism be set up to periodically liaise with concerned agencies and state governments so that the land of the AAI which has been encroached can be cleared. Furthermore, the committee has recommended that a dedicated in-house cell be created by the AAI which would make a realistic assessment of the rate of passenger growth and the need for passenger facilities on a holistic basis over the next 20-40 years. It is of the view that based on the assessment of the in-house cell infrastructure should be created in terms of technology, passenger facilities, airport management, areas of safety and security among others.
