UK-based SME body setting up India chapter

Bindu D. Menon

New Delhi, Nov. 28 Genesis Initiative, a UK-based umbrella for small and medium enterprises, is setting up an India chapter.

The organisation will promote the interests of domestic SMEs at the Government level, besides fostering intellectual sharing, technology transfer, and increase in bilateral trade with SMEs of the two nation.

Led by Prince Michael of Kent, the founder-patron of the body, the Genesis Initiative represents a body of individuals representing entrepreneurs, academia, policy makers and SME organisations within the UK. “Our vision is to promote enterprises and encourage SMEs, create a consensus amongst the sector on key issues, and promote the development of cross parliamentarian consensus on issues relating to SMEs. India is a key destination for us as there is immense potential for SMEs,” Mr Alan Cleverly, Executive Director,

The Genesis Initiative told Business Line. Apart from representation in Brussels, India is the first country where Genesis is looking to expand.

The body is establishing its India chapter in Bangalore and Delhi. It will be operational next month. It will seek mutual cooperation between SMEs in India and UK, besides looking for possible joint ventures and partnerships with Indian SMEs in sectors like textile, manufacturing, IT and infrastructure, he said. “Indian SMEs can optimise their growth potential if they come together. This will help them in achieving economic and structural reforms besides creating new jobs, new ideas and new wealth. By galvanising the SME community we can ensure that the voice of the sector will be heard loud and clear,” he added.

Mr M.N. Chittiappa will be the chairman of the Genesis Initiative India.
